SonicVox - Realtime Voice Changer

I’ve got 2 boys that just LOOOVE Star Wars, so this Voice Changer app is going to be another one of those things that makes my iPhone disappear. :)

With SonicVox you can use several different “voices” and have your voice echoed in real time with the new voice. There are several to pick from, and the developers are working on several more right now for future updates.

It’s best to use it with headphones on, or you can even make Skype phone calls with your iphone and SonicVox, kind of like that one “hide the identity of the witness” type voice.

To change the voice, just swipe the screen left or right. Looking forward to the new voices!

Grocery IQ - Never Forget the Bananas Again

If you’re like me, you try hard to remember to get everything when you’re at the store, but you seem to always forget one thing! Never again, with Grocery IQ! It’s a quick (and fun) way to keep a grocery list going all week until you have to get to the store, and then you have your phone with you already so you won’t ever forget your grocery list!

I really like how Grocery IQ stores a list of Favorites and a History, which 95% of the items I purchase are things I had on a list from the last few weeks.

Another cool thing is, like on Mail or SMS, the icon shows how many items are still “open” on the list with a number in a red circle. Cool! That’s the first 3rd party app that I’ve seen do that!

I spoke with the developer of Grocery IQ, and he filled me in on some up and coming features that will make Grocery IQ even better. Later this month an update is coming to let you handle multiple lists, like for me I usually have a Costco list and a Wal-Mart list, and sometimes even a Harmon’s list (great produce). In November, version 2.0 will have a shared/syncing option, which will be perfect for my wife and I managing the weekly grocery list.

Sure there are a few other grocery apps out there, but not only does Grocery IQ have an intuitive interface and great features, but it was also highlighted this week as Apple’s App Store Pick of the Week!

I’m very impressed with Grocery IQ, and I’ve tried several of the other ones out there. I think you’ll love it too!

RulerPhone - Not Just Another iPhone Ruler!

You’ve probably seen some of the iPhone “ruler” apps out there, but RulerPhone is not your typical ruler app. RulerPhone uses a wallet sized card (driver’s license, credit card, whatever) to let you accurately measure anything when you’re on the go and forgot your measuring tape.

Scenario 1: You’re determined to get rid of your 1970s flower orange couch you got from your neighbor and replace it with a brand new couch from the local furniture store. You head to the store, find the perfect sofa, but you’re not sure it will fit in that living room corner. Of course, you forgot the measuring tape, who brings measuring tape to the furniture store? Enter RulerPhone. You grab your wallet and your iPhone, take out a card, take a picture, line up the card, measure the couch, buy the couch, and relax at home on your new couch.

Scenario 2: You’re house hunting. You love the 7th house if you’ve looked at, but there’s one problem. Will that hutch fit on that wall? You didn’t bring a measuring tape, and neither did your realtor. You pull out your phone and a card from your wallet, snap a picture, line it up, and presto. Yes the hutch will fit, and your wife is ecstatic that you (and RulerPhone) saved the day.

There are tons more uses than these, but you get the picture. RulerPhone will inevitably come in handy, so you might as well buy it now!

You can see in my screenshots I measured a picture frame (for a 4″x6″ photo) and you can see how accurate it was!

TouchTerm - SSH when you need it most

I left home today after some server issues, and just as I arrived at Lowe’s I realized I hadn’t reset an important service on one of my servers. I would have been dead in the water had it not been for (1) Apple’s distribution platform for iPhone Apps: the AppStore, and (2) TouchTerm, a great, affordable app for remote SSH access at anytime. I was able to download the app very quickly and get right onto my server and fix the problem in no time at all.

TouchTerm makes it easy as it saves your connections, especially when you have multiple servers like I do. It says the password saving feature is disabled, not sure if that is editable, but it makes it more secure from the get go not letting someone who may pick up your phone get access to all your servers. Plus, you don’t have to save each profile, you can just do a one time connection if you need to.

Once connected I found myself tapping on my knees like a virtual keyboard to remember my password, because its pattern is engrained in my mind but not the actual password itself. Luckily I remembered it.

I found putting in several different commands I use on a daily basis gave me access to whatever I needed quite readily, even “top” with its long and wide output.

There are of course other competitors in the space (SSH $2.99, pTerm $4.99, and iSSH $4.99), but the reviews and screenshots of TouchTerm, in the few moments I had to compare in the Lowe’s parking lot today, leaned me towards TouchTerm. After looking at them again this evening I think I made the best choice (despite not testing them all). Maybe one of these days I’ll try one of the others, but at this point I have no reason to, TouchTerm does what I need, and does it very well.

WiFinder - Easily Find Wi-Fi Networks

One of the first things I searched for when the AppStore opened was a Wi-Fi Finder, and now here it is! WiFinder makes it easy to see which wi-fi networks are available and that actually give a connection instead of trying them one by one. It checks the local network to see if it can open a “popular web browser”, which I’m guessing is FireFox. A green checkmark shows it’s safe to use, and then you can just go to Settings > Wi-Fi and choose that network.

If I was in a big city I’d walk around and get some screenshots where I pick up 5-10 wi-fi networks, but I’m out in the small town where it’s just my network within reach. I’ll try to update it on one of my business trips in the next few weeks.
